Developing our people is a key objective for BP. We have partnerships with 19 academies and institutes to deliver technical learning and development. Whatever your role, location or background, we’ll help you get to where you want to be through our performance management process. It’s very straightforward. First, we agree a set of clear, achievable objectives with you. Then we’ll work closely with you to ensure that you accomplish each of them, regularly assessing your progress on the way.
We’ll provide great induction and work-shadowing programmes to get you up to speed. If, for instance, you need to learn a new language when you start your job, we’ll help you to develop the necessary level of fluency.
As you progress, you’ll always know what experience, formal training, guidance and support you need to take the next step in your career, which could mean gaining a new qualification or taking on a fresh challenge. So whether it’s receiving safety training, keeping up to date with technological innovation or developing the commercial skills to consistently deliver for the business, we’ll support you to learn as much as you can – however experienced you are – although you’ll have every opportunity to drive your own development.
Diversity and inclusion
Our perspective on diversity and inclusion (D&I) is that it is more than a box-ticking exercise – it is a business essential
As a multi-national company we want our workforce to represent the societies in which we operate. So we work to attract, motivate, develop and retain the best talent from communities around the globe. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion (D&I) enables us to be creative, competitive and thrive in our environment, as we deliver safe and reliable energy the world needs now and in the future.
We believe that success comes from the energy of our people. We currently have over 80,000 employees working in 80 countries across the globe. In addition, our global activities support thousands of other contractors and joint venture staff.
The better our people, the better we are. D&I is a key component in our continued growth and success. We respect individual differences and we value the contribution of each employee to make their team and the business more effective. In a recent survey, 74% of our employees believed that managers seek out diverse views from their teams.
We believe that the proportion of women in leadership should be reflected in our workforce as a whole and we are making good progress to attract, develop and retain more women. Over 30% of our graduate hires are female in the UK through continued efforts to highlight the depth and breadth of careers available in BP which include science, trading, business and engineering.
Our executive team meets quarterly to track progress on D&I initiatives and drive accountability on the D&I ambition goals. D&I is also embedded in our code of conduct; the code reflects our values based approach – safety, respect, excellence, courage and one team – and forms a core part of how we do business. We are working to bring our values to life and embed them in our day-to-day behaviour.
Structured learning
You’ll have access to structured courses, online learning, mentors and a whole host of other methods for continuing your development. These will focus on leadership, communication and presentation skills, as well as technical capabilities. You’ll build your confidence and gain different perspectives by tapping into the knowledge of people working alongside you, who include some of the industry’s brightest minds. Equally important, we develop our managers too, so that they can bring the best out of their people.
Graduate and postgraduate development
Our challenge programme immerses graduates from many countries and disciplines rapidly into the world of BP. It offers early development of both technical and professional skills, along with practical experience working on live projects and formal learning. With real responsibility, great variety and plenty of support, it aims to propel talented graduates into senior roles within BP
We look today for our leaders of tomorrow – postgraduates with at least three years’ professional experience who can drive our business forward into the future.
Our future leaders programme is an accelerated development programme open to those with bold aspirations, true determination and a flexible outlook to work anywhere in the world.
With access and exposure to our senior leaders who’ll advise, support and guide you on your journey, you’ll have unmatched opportunities to develop to your full potential in our Downstream (refining & marketing) business, human resources or information technology and services (IT&S).
Our commitment to developing our people is reflected in our industry-leading, accelerated development programmes that are transforming the way many people learn. In fact, our extensive leadership development programmes have been attended by employees from 74 countries, in four regions, speaking ten different languages.

Reward philosophy and principles
Our people are focused on meeting the future’s growing demand for energy. Every day, they face challenges on a scale many people can barely imagine. Their talents and commitment ensure BP continues to work safely at the frontiers and act responsibly to secure the energy we need for everything from manufacturing to hospitals to homes. Helping solve the global energy challenge gives our people job satisfaction that’s second to none.
Your learning, growth and reward as a BP employee will be supported by our strong focus on performance management. At BP, this has two major parts: firstly we align your individual objectives with the goals of your part of the business; secondly we measure and recognise how effectively you have performed against your objectives and contributed to those goals. This approach enables our businesses to recognise strong individual performance, and to reward it accordingly. But this emphasis on performance management isn’t just about the financial reward - a clear set of objectives provides you with sharp focus and direction, giving you a strong sense of engagement with your work and the value that you, personally, add to BP.
At BP, we understand that shared goals can inspire great individual performances – performances that contribute to our ability to supply the world with responsible energy.
